The Sustainability Versatility Design Awards

Feature the use of Eastern White Pine (pinus stobus) as part of a sustainable modern structure. We're looking for dialogue inspiring, future-predicting, forward-thinking designs. Help us imagine a more sustainable future while featuring Eastern White Pine.

Eligibility

This design competition is open to architecture, engineering and design students currently enrolled in an accredited program. There is no fee for this competition. Entrants may submit as an individual or a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Team submissions must designate a primary contact person for communication purposes only.

Building Design Parameters

Submissions musts adhere to the following parameters:

  1. Project must prominently feature Eastern White Pine on interior or exterior of building.
  2. Building must be a free-standing structure (home, backyard office, in-law apartment, design studio, etc.).
  3. 600 SF max.
  4. Include other features increasing the sustainability/efficiency of the structure.

Registration Deadline: November 30, 2011
Submission Deadline: March 1, 2012
Award Announcement: April 5, 2012
Reception & Exhibition: April 27, 2012 in Boston, MA at the annual NELMA convention

Awards

Three levels of awards will be provided.

First $1,000 Cash Award, 2-night stay in Boston, MA, featured interview and article in White Pine Monograph.
Second $500 Cash Award, 2-night stay in Boston, MA.
Third $100 Cash Award.

First and Second Place winners will provide a brief presentation of their project at a ceremony on April 27, 2012 in Boston, MA at the annual NELMA convention.

Material Submission Requirements

All submissions should be provided electronically in PDF format. File set up must be designed for 24" x 36" "boards" in portrait format. The Unique Identification Number provided in the registration confirmation must be clearly marked on each submission board/sheet. Boards should also be marked numerically as they are to be displayed for viewing from left to right.

At a minimum, submissions should include:

  • A ground floor and/or site plan showing the relationship of the building to the surrounding landscaping, adjacent buildings, etc.
  • Elevations and/or sections sufficient to show the building’s relationship to the site and the integration of building systems and exterior facade.
  • At least one detailed section drawing or three-dimensional model (either photograph(s) of a physical model or computer-generated images) illustrating the integration of sustainable practices and demonstrating the use of eastern white pine.
  • Additional floor plans as appropriate.

Entrants are also required to provide a 750-word (max) narrative describing the project, the use of eastern white pine and other sustainability features. At the conclusion of the competition, all of the entries will be on public display as part of an exhibit/reception at the NELMA convention.

Anonymity

This competition requires entrants to register on the competition website (www sustainableversatility.org) prior to submission. Upon completion of the registration process, entrant(s) will be assigned a unique Identification Number. The Juried Review is an anonymous process. Other than the Unique Identification Number provided to entrant(s), submissions are to bear no marks of logo, insignia, or writing that identify their authorship.

Ownership and Copyright

Materials submitted for the competition become the property of the NELMA, and may be retained for exhibition, publication, and promotion purposes. NELMA reserves the right in its retention of ownership of all competition materials to utilize submissions in any exhibition, publication, or promotional endeavor, and without compensation to the entrants.

Each competitor will retain full copyright of all materials submitted.
